Texas Public School Nutrition Guidelines
On March 2, 2004, the Texas Department of Agriculture issued
the Texas Public School Nutrition Policy. According to the
state, 35 percent of Texas' children are considered obese
or overweight. This is a ten percent increase over the past
decade, and a trend that needs to be addressed. Parents and
students can access the most current version of this policy
at
http://www.agr.state.tx.us
In accordance with the Food and Nutrition Division, of the Texas Department of Agriculture, the Texas Public School Nutrition Policy has changed.
Elementary schools will no longer allow birthday treats or food of any kind to be brought in and served on a student’s birthday. These treats interfere with the nutrition guidelines set forth by the state.
Middle School vending machines must be set to “off” from 30 minutes prior to 30 minutes after the meal periods, breakfast and lunch.
High School vending machines in the Commons must be turned off during breakfast and lunch. Because reimbursable meals are served in this area the area is no longer part of the Exclusive Beverage Contract.
