Health Care the focus of FBISD Student Leadership Seminar
Participants in Fort Bend ISD's Student Leadership Program learned about health care in our community as part of their monthly, day-long seminar. Sonal Bhuchar, a physical therapist and FBISD Board President, sponsored the seminar and accompanied the program participants on their visit to Memorial Hermann Sugar Land Hospital.
Dr. Kavinder Bajwa, a graduate of FBISD's Willowridge High School, helped kick off the day's events by sharing details of his medical career. He also offered students advice on developing their leadership roles at school, at work, in social settings or in special interest groups. Rod Brace, Chief Executive Officer at Memorial Hermann Southwest, spoke of the growing job opportunities in the community and encouraged students to consider seeking employment within their own community when deciding on a career. Program participants also enjoyed a tour of the hospital's emergency room, led by Marketing Director, Karen Chitty-Boe; and a tour of Life Flight, led by Flight Nurse, Nathan Lytle.
Following their visit to Memorial Hermann Sugar Land Hospital, the Student Leadership Program participants took part in a"working lunch," during which they viewed a presentation on The Global Center for Science and Technology, led by Olwen Herron, FBISD Chief Accountability and Organizational Development Officer; Melissa Stadtfeld, FBISD Secondary Science Coordinator; and Jill Curtis, Feasibility Committee Member. After reviewing the presentation, students provided feedback regarding their impressions of the center.
The students also enjoyed presentations by Dr. Mark Williamson, who addressed mental health issues in Fort Bend County; and Doctor Jean Galloway, who shared information regarding the services and programs offered through the Fort Bend County Health Department.
"Even though the focus of the seminar was on health care, students also learned about the areas of business and finance, marketing, indigent care, legislative issues and mental health," said Bhuchar. "This seminar gave students a great opportunity to gain exposure to various entities of our community." The Student Leadership Program participants will meet again on April 22.
