The Math and Science Academy will be a four-year program that encompasses the high school core curriculum with additional courses that emphasize accelerated learning in math and science disciplines. Students will have an opportunity to participate in enrichment activities and internship programs. Completion of the Dulles High School Math and Science Academy program will provide students with advanced knowledge in these disciplines, collegiate credit, special project participation and / or internship experience. This academy is accepting applications from current 8th grade students for the 2010-2011 school year.
Program Components
This program is designed for academically motivated students who wish to accept the challenge of a rigorous course of study that meets post-secondary entrance requirements.
The academy will provide unique learning experiences, allowing students to better understand the role of mathematics and science in an increasingly global and technological society. Students will be able to interact with the professional and university community to develop skills that will prepare them to be tomorrow’s math and science leaders, and academy graduates will have been exposed to a full range of careers in mathematics and science. Graduates of the Math and Science Academy will have earned multiple college credits through AP Exams, articulated Dual Credit courses, and opportunities for online college level courses.
Program Requirements
Students must meet all of the graduation requirements for either the Recommended HS Program (RHSP) or the Distinguished Achievement Program (DAP) Students doubling science courses with either Biology or Chemistry will graduate under the RHSP. Math and Science coursework will be completed under the Pre-AP, AP or Honors programs. In addition, students must complete five math courses and six science courses, and take at least two AP exams in each academy discipline. Students will also be required to complete either a graduation project or an internship during their junior or senior year in the program.
