Curriculum
Core Courses
Intro to Medical Science Technology– Course is designed to familiarize the first year student with medical systems from the perspective of an industry medical professional.
Medical Terminology– Upon completion of this course students will have an understanding of medical eponyms, acronyms, abbreviations, symbols, and documentation.
Anatomy of Human Systems/Medical Ethics– Students begin this course exploring medical ethical and legal issues through research, discussion, and presentation. Curriculum then turns to the detailed, lab based study of Human Anatomy and Physiology.
Internships
Medical Science Internship– Students are offered an opportunity to be mentored by medical personnel in world class Texas Medical Center facilities including St. Luke’s Episcopal Hospital, MD Anderson Cancer Center, Michael DeBakey VA Medical Center, Texas Children’s Hospital, and the Women’s Hospital of Texas.
Advanced Medical Science Internship– Advanced students are given the opportunity to work one on one with a medical practitioner in their chosen field of interest.
Supplemental Electives
Medical Microbiology– Students engage in classroom and laboratory activities to understand how microscopic organisms affect human health.
Pathophysiology– The focus of this course is the identification, treatment, and prevention of diverse human disease processes.
Mental Health– This is an Abnormal Psychology course from an assessment and treatment perspective.
Clinical Nutrition– Students learn the physiology, sociology, psychology, and economics of
lifetime nutrition for self and patients.
Pharmacology– Students study all aspects of pharmacology from safety to pharmacokinetics. Upon completion, 18 year olds will be prepared to take the Pharmacy Technician Certification test.
Advanced Placement Environmental Science- This course is taught by UT MD Anderson faculty and teaches students to consider how the environment affects public health |
