The Medical Science Academy- Is it for YOU?
At Hightower Medical Science Academy motivated students meet academic challenges and have opportunities to explore world class medical facilities.
We offer four years of intense instruction, internships, and competitions. With the knowledge and practical skills obtained, Academy students graduate with a decided advantage over others competing to enter collegiate medical programs.
Requirements for Admission
- Completed application
- High grade point average and TAKS scores
- Essay
- Letters of Recommendation
- Attendance/Discipline Records
- Personal Interview
- Students must maintain an exemplary academic record
Summer Medical Science Camp
Aspiring healthcare providers entering 5th, 6th, 7th, or 8th grade in the fall are encouraged to attend. Activities include:
- Dissection labs with a variety of cow and sheep organs (similar to human): eye, brain, kidney, heart, trachea, and lungs
- Leadership development exercises
- Suture lab
- Guest lecturers from the medical community
- Microscopic examination of normal human tissues and common pathology
- Forensic Medicine/CSI case study
- Reflex experiments to help understand the nervous system
- Grossology
- DNA extraction for understanding genetics and heredity
- CPR and first aid instruction
- Vital signs assessment to aid in understanding the cardiovascular system
- Discussions about high school academics, college, and career opportunities
