Program Description
AVID is a world-wide college readiness program for underserved students. AVID’s mission is to close the achievement gap by preparing all students for college readiness and success in a global society. AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) was created in 1980 by Mary Catherine Swanson, a high school English teacher. Many of the students in AVID’s elective classes are first generation college goers, lack the financial resources necessary for a college education, do not have the support structure for college readiness in place at home, yet have good minds, work very hard for high academic achievement, and have college degree attainment as their early adulthood goal. AVID’s methods and strategies serve to improve school-wide achievement by opening access and opportunity for all students.

School Sites:
Currently, the AVID Program is located at six of our high school campuses: Bush, Elkins, Hightower, Kempner, Marshall, and Willowridge. In addition, Missouri City Middle School and McAuliffe Middle School are implementing AVID for seventh and eighth graders.
Student Eligibility Requirements:
Students are selected for the program based on AVID national recruitment criteria and teacher/counselor recommendation. Each site has an AVID Coordinator who leads the student selection process.
Program Outcomes:
Since implementation began in 1999-2000, there have been eight graduation classes of AVID seniors. Over 90% applied and were accepted to post-high school educational institutions including four year, two year, and technical colleges. Over 70% of the AVID graduates are attending college. Major scholarships that our seniors consistently are awarded include the Michael and Susan Dell Foundation Scholarship, the George Foundation’s High School Scholarship, the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo Metropolitan and Opportunity Scholarships, the Linda Lorelle Scholarship, and the George and Mary Josephine Hamman Foundation Scholarship. In addition, many of our graduates receive state, federal, and university grants and scholarships to help fund their higher education goals. Our FBISD AVID graduates are now graduating from college and entering the workforce as knowledgeable, productive, and contributing members of society. We are proud of each of them and their accomplishments.
